The Zagreb World Challenge saw Van Zyl finishing in the best position of all 4 South African athletes after claiming 3rd place in the 400m Hurdles. Van Zyl came from behind to get a podium finish outsprinting strong finishers to the line. Van Zyl’s time of 49.69 was good enough for the bronze on an inspired run late into the season to close of 2017 strong. The winner on the evening was Abderrahaman Samba who was the only athlete to run sub 49 seconds on the evening when he clocked 48.70.

The next best finisher in Zagreb was Khotso Mokoena with a jump of 7.64m. Mokoena’s best jump on the night landed him on 5th place on an evening where all the jumpers failed to jump 8m with the winner Aleksandr Menkov jumping 7.98m.

Carina Horn and Pieter Conradie both finished 6th in their respective races on the evening. Horn clocked 11.44 in the 100m which saw Nigerian, Blessing Okagbare-Ighoteguonor win in 11.14. Conradie clocked 46.66 in the 400m against a strong field which saw American, Gil Roberts win in 44.94 ahead of Isaac Makwala in 2nd place with 45.29.

As the season comes to a close the athletes will be looking to get some much-needed rest before turning their focus to the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games in Australia from 4-15 April.
