The Zlata Tretra Ostra Golden Spike will be nothing short of breath taking with the biggest track athletes in the world participating and our very own Wayde van Niekerk will be one of the action attractions in this block buster of a line-up with the likes of Usain Bolt, David Rudisha and Mo Farah also present at this event.

Our focus however is on the SA athletes competing at the Golden Spike event as SA has 4 of our growing list of top sprinters lining up.

  1. Wayde van Niekerk will be participating in the 300m sprint, an event where he is currently the 3rd fastest ever in the world after clocking a blistering 31.03 seconds in 2016, and, we all know what that meant for the 400m world record later that same year in Rio. We also know of his 100m and 200m form as he has bettered both his PB’s (Personal Bests) with 9.94 seconds and 19.84 seconds (new SA record) respectively. The man is in PB form and the 300m will be a preview into his 400m form as he will be participating in both the 200m and 400m at the World Championships.

  1. Clarence Munyai will be lining up alongside Wayde van Niekerk in the 300m sprint, our SA Junior 200m record holder with a 200m time of 20.10 seconds sees him as one of the rare junior athletes knocking at the sub20 second mark which has only ever been broken by one junior athlete by the name of Usain Bolt (who will be running in the 100m at the same meeting). Munyai also clocked an impressive 32.87 second PB and national junior record at the EC Classic Shoot Out earlier this year at UJ and after setting a mark of 20.41 seconds for victory last week in Bilbao (Spain) he is in excellent form to better his time and junior record by going sub 32 seconds in the 300m.

  1. Alyssa Conley will be lining up in the 200m sprint and she will be looking to better her SB (Season Best) time of 22.94 seconds which she set at the SA Senior Championships in Potchefstroom when successfully defending her 100m and 200m double. She is also not far from her PB of 22.84 and a stage such as this with fellow SA athletes fighting for top spots might just push her into something magical and victory is in her reach as one of the favourites on the line-up.

  1. Antonio Alkana who is in excellent form after smashing the SA and African record in the 110mh will be looking for another solid performance to get him closer to the sub 13 seconds club and cement himself as contender for the top podium spot with the World Championships looming.

The Ostrava Golden Spike event will be a great platform for the SA athletes to polish their performances and preparation with the World Championships a mere 37 days away in London. This event will have the whole world standing in anticipation and we look forward to see the SA Flag flying high tonight because of these amazing ambassadors.
