Lebogang Shange stunned the South African athletics community by breaking nothing less than four national records during the 2015 season; a season that is far from over. Shange, who always had a playful approach to his race-walking, seems to be much more focused and we can now perceive his true potential. The 3000m, 5000m, 20000m and 20km South African Race Walk record holder will be chasing another record and top ten position at this year’s World Championships in Beijing.
Most of the South African race-walking records have been broken by Shange and he will without a doubt leave the sport as one of the greats. However, his career is only at the tip of the iceberg and with a few more years of consistent preparation, perseverance and focus, we can see Lebogang chasing and breaking world records! His 2015 performances, most of which he achieved during major international competitions, proves that he is capable to compete against the best race-walkers in the world.
Earlier this year the 20km men’s world race-walking record was broken twice by different men and different major competitions was also won by different competitors. This is an event that should be watched with owls-eyes and it’s time we take note of our two-time African Race walk champion competing against the best in the world. Lebogang’s personal best of 1:21:50 will definitely see him finish amongst the top 25; however, he remains full of surprises, hence we expect a top 10 finish from the star athlete.
South Africa supports Lebogang Shange and race walking in South Africa!
