Thando RotoBeing only 18 years old, this reggae music fan, Thando Roto, already has a 100m time of 10.30, which he ran this year in the historic race where Simon Magakwe ran the first sub 10sec rocord braking 100m in SA. Akani Simbine also broke the previous SA record here with 10.02 but Magakwe won with 9.98. Roto actually led the race for about 30 to 40m where he finished overall 6th! This 100m time of his also being a qualifying time to go run World Junior Champs in Eugene Oregon later this year, should SA have money to send the team, he’ll be looking to make the final and come home with a medal. And he has a 200m time of 21.32.

Hailing from TuksSport High School he also now studies Sports Science at Varsity Cup leaders Tukkies and is coached by Hennie Kriel, who is also one of his inspirations besides from Yohan Blake and Ben Johnson. Roto aims to run sub 10 and sub 20 in the future and when asked if he ever though that that would be possible without Simon breaking the barrier this weekend he replied with “Nope, I always thought it was possible and that it would be just a matter of time someone did it. It has been my goal all along and I believe I am getting there with the help of my coach aka Guru (Hennie Kriel)”.

Not only was he part of a historic 100m race at Senior SA’s this year, but he was also part of the Tuks 4x100m relay team who ran the fastest SA club relay team time of 39.52, at the UJ Varsity Cup, and not many athletes can say that at the age of 18! He is definitely an athlete to look out for in the future and we’ll be looking out for him to be one of the athletes to BRING TRACK BACK in South Africa!!
