Longjump men

Ruswahl Samaai is becoming a household name in Long Jump circles across the world and he is marked as one of the most consistent ‘over 8meter jumpers’. The South African Long Jump champion with his bubbly persona is the ‘next big thing’, so before he elevates to world stage, let’s find out more about him:

What is your nickname? “Rush”

Favourite food? “Anything pasta” (he is a great cook by the way)

Describe yourself in three words? “My girlfriend Alecha describes me as: ‘you have a heart of a poor boy and a mind of a conqueror’ “

Craziest thing you have ever done? “Ek het so baie dinge aangevang ek weet nie wat om te kies nie/I have done so many crazy things, I don’t even know which one to choose”

Who is your role model and why? “My mother Minnie Samaai because she is a God-loving woman who puts her trust in God and always puts her children first, not just her own children, but also family and friends’ children”

What other sports and teams do you support? “Rugby, the Crusaders and New Zealand” (It seems like it is a Western province thing to support New Zealand, mmmm)

Favourite music genre and artist? “R&B and I don’t have a favourite artists, I just listen to music that makes sense, music that tells a story”

Favourite place in the world? “Cape Town, Paarl my hometown”

Ruswahl Samaai will be competing at various Diamond Leagues, but the big one for him is the 2016 Rio Olympic Games. After finishing fifth at the World Indoor Championships and equalling the South African Indoor record, Samaai is clearly one of the favourites to take a podium position in Rio. Fly Samaai, fly.
