With the likes of Zarc Visser and Mokoena competing at international level, South Africa has a missing link in the long jump category when it comes to woman. BUT.. fear not, for Zinzi Chabangu is on her way! Coached by legendary Owen van Niekerk and wife Maryna van Niekerk who was a long jump queen in her time. This year alone Zinzi has broken the SA triple jump junior record 3 times! Her long jump personal best is 6.16m and triple jump 12.93. And just to add to her tally, in 2012 she competed at the Southern Regions and won the triple jump title and last year she represented SA at the World Youth Champs.
She goes to Monument high and is not sure yet what University she will go to, but sure enough she won’t have a problem in getting offers. Maybe UJ is the place to be with all the long and triple jumping masters roaming their grounds. Her inspiration is Patience Ntshingila and the bible verse 1 Corinthians 9:24-27 “Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training they do it to get a crown that will not last ;but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. Therefore I do not run like a man running aimlessly: I do not fight like a man beating the air. No, I beat my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize”.
“I am an ordinary person, normally shy, but fun to be around and I love happy vibes. My goals are to get to the Olympics and break the World Record! To all the jumpers out there I just want to say that they should train hard, be disciplined,to believe in themselves and focus on improving each cm !!!! God, family, discipline, determination, respect, and of course great coaches and good training is the order you need to align in your life” – Zinzi Chabangu
